Even though the tunnels in the Principality of Monaco are well maintained and fitted with the most up-to-date equipment, it remains important to know what to do in the event of a problem.

Basic rules

  • Observe the speed limit
  • Observe the lane assignment signs
  • Switch on your lights, even if the tunnel is lit
  • Stop at red lights and at barriers
  • Maintain a safe distance: this allows smoke to be located and facilitates access by the emergency services

In the event of a traffic jam or stationary traffic

  • Keep a distance of at least 5 metres between vehicles
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Turn off the engine when stationary
  • Do not leave your vehicle

In the event of a breakdown or accident

  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Park your car as far to the right as possible
  • Turn off the engine
  • Exit the vehicle with caution
  • Go to the emergency telephone (orange post), walking by the side wall of the tunnel
  • Immediately inform the emergency services using the emergency telephones

In the event of fire

Fire and smoke are lethal. Save your life, not your car or belongings.

  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Keep your distance from the vehicle on fire
  • Park your car as far to the right as possible
  • Do not turn your car around or reverse
  • Turn off the engine and leave the key in the car
  • Exit the vehicle with caution
  • Go to the emergency telephone (orange post), walking by the side wall of the tunnel
  • Immediately inform the emergency services
  • Only attempt to extinguish the fire if it is in its initial stages. If you are not successful, immediately proceed to a shelter or emergency exit
  • Immediately inform the emergency services using the emergency telephones
  • Warning:The emergency call area does not offer protection from fire.Take shelter if necessary
