In daily use, the tunnels and underground passages are part of the Principality’s urban traffic system. While they are part of our day-to-day lives, it is still important to know how to react in the event of a problem in a tunnel.
In a tunnel, the following basic rules for safe driving should be followed:
- Observe the speed limit
- Observe the lane assignment signs
- Switch on your lights, even if the tunnel is lit
- Stop at red lights and at barriers
- Maintain a safe distance: this allows smoke to be located and facilitates access by the emergency services.
There will be other instructions depending on the nature of any incidents which occur. Read more in the Tunnel Safety factsheet.
